I did an other test and your fixes definitely improved things. I
un-pax-ed the dist sets of my snapshot from a netbooted system to a
local disk. I was not able to extract all dist sets with my old kernel.
The system got hung at some point. With the new kernel I was able to
extract all dist sets three times without any problems.
