It's a 382 allright, and NetBSD does work on it.

Well, that should work. *If* I remember correctly: when the boot prom
doesn't see the keyboard it automatically switches to the RS-232. 
Never tried it though (on a 382) .. Are you sure that the cable is OK ?
There was a thread on the subject, check a message by Ray Irvine
from port-hp300, dated 07/16/1999.

Anyway it would seem that the machine has the frodo stuff, as the
400's. Having no experience with those I'd leave the answer to
someone who knows. So if nothing else works try one of those 
funky cables that give you two RS-232 ports from a single 
DB25-connector.

btw, it's a nice machine actually. Too bad I haven't found more memory
for mine:-/
