You could try grabbing ftp://ftp.comp.vuw.ac.nz/pub/packages/X/Xhp300/XhpBSD.gz
and see if that behaves any differently.  This is a statically linked binary
built on a 4.4BSD-Lite system but is what I still use on my NetBSD systems.
(Admittedly though the X server on those machines is not stressed very heavily 
these days).
