Could you please try booting the NetBSD 1.2 GENERIC kernel and tell me
if you still have problems with your tape drive?  The kernel is
available at:

    ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-1.2/hp300/install/netbsd.gz
