Indeed, as Marcus notes, 'ed' is the standard UNIX editor. 

It is still useful in environments where you don't have
cursor positioning, or over a non-transparent channel
which filters out control characters, like ESC or ^S/^Q,
or which is so slow that it only echos whole lines at
a time.
