An i386 kernel build dir is about 63MB. If you use the native tools (config, make) a cobalt kernel should be in the same region.
If you use build.sh & the tools there, it may easily go a lot higher.
The 63MB do not include sources, of course.

From my gut feeling, I'd say 2GB is plenty for a full rebuild.
