Thank you for your replies.  They help bring clarity.

Not to divert you from your work, but at your convenience can you pass
on a short description comparing GENERIC to INSTALL?  I'm assuming
that GENERIC is the full kernel while INSTALL is a minimalistic kernel
intended simply for installation?
