You might try adding a huge amount of swap, and trying to adjust
various limit settings. (e.g.: unlimit)

I wouldn't expect java to run at an acceptable speed on the cobalt.
(Too slow of startup for dev/hello world.  Too slow to run a servelet
engine.)  I'd love to be proven wrong though.
