Hi all;

I'm having fun so far, here's some questions that I've not found
answers to, yet.
Thanks for any pointers. Some of these may be easily answered with
research- but some I've looked into a little bit already, some I've
only looked casually yet. I'm not new to unix although this is my
first time setting up something from scratch (Qube 2, 128 RAM, 1.6.1
install from Dennis' CD image).

1) Is there a searchable archive for this list?

I haven't found one yet, although I thought that would be a problem
,there's not a huge amount of traffic here and I've read back (subjects
anyway) into 2002, so far. I just have this feeling that everything I
want to ask, has been asked before.

2) What are major packages that aren't ported to MIPS yet (what will I
be missing out upon)? I have only found acrobat reader (any version)
unavailable so far (from pkgsrc attempts to compile). Although I read
a post from a while ago that said one of PHP/MySQL (I forget which)
wasn't runnable even though it would compile (is that right?)

2a) I was going to web-publish a small database from NetBSD, if not
PHP/MySQL what else would work?

3) Is the default partitioning provided by the installer CD really the
best format?

bash-2.05# df -a -m
Filesystem 1M-blocks Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
/dev/wd0a 53556 767 50111 1% /
/dev/wd0f 2016 3 1912 0% /var
/dev/wd0g 484 0 460 0% /tmp
bash-2.05#

is how it set my partitions. I guess I'm going to live with it; for
some reason, I want to think that more would be better. Can I
repartition on the fly as I've done with other filesystems? I had a 60
gig drive spare but of course I'm wishing I had started with a 120, now.

4) is getting an external SCSI HD going a major pain or should it just
work? right now, my Adaptec 2940U card is installed with no drive
attached, the original kernal fom the installer, I get ahc0: data
parity errors constantly. Tomorrow perhaps I'll hook up a drive and
see if they go away :) I tried on adjustkernal and compile of the new
kernal but it errored out at ..perhaps.. the ethernet, and I've not
got back to that yet. Google turns up mentions of this error,
NetBSD, and IRQ issues in the BIOS of i386 machines; nothing for me and
a Qube I think. I have a pretty decent sized external SCSI drive
just sitting, and was thinking of using it for system backups. I need
t o play with this, next. I suspect the hundreds of errors are causing
some slowdown, too.

5) I'd like to use the modem port on the Qube to provide one PPP line,
for dial-up- should that work OK?

6) What the heck is the name of a vt100 shell "GUI" using vt100 cursor
positioning, that I can't recall the name of? I've seen a couple in
use but...

There's more, but I can't think of them at the moment...

Thanks for any help;

Brian
