argh! it was an even longer shot; the jumper on the maxtor disk wasn't
set to master. i'm too used to the western digital method of not using
a jumper if it's a single disk. with this maxtor (33073h3), you *must*
have the j50 jumper set.

thank you for your suggestion of using the original cobalt restore cd.
i spent about 2 hours with it exhibiting the same behavior; the
netboot install would work but then when the qube was rebooted, it
would hang with "starting up" displayed on the lcd.

i finally figured out that it was the jumper. it didn't help that i
had stuck the jumper in the same position as it's on all of my wd
disks and kept checking it. but the drive label plainly indicated that
pin j50 should be jumpered for a single/master drive. of course, it
didn't indicate *which* set of pins was j50. had to go to the web for
that :^)
