If the recovery CD isn't working, then you need to
ditch the crossover cable and move to a hub. Basically
you need a 3rd machine in the mix to run tcpdump and
watch what's going on. From there you'll be able to
see what's wrong.

As a first step, you'll want to watch for the Qube
making dhcp/bootp requests. And hopefully the recovery
server answering with an address and related boot
info. If you're not at least seeing this exchange
between the Qube and recovery box, then you may be
looking at a hardware (cables, qube, recovery box, etc
etc..) problem or other low level problem of some
sort.

Anyway, if you can get a sniff of the boot traffic,
and you post it here, someone can help.
