IIRC Direct Cable Connection doesn't use ppp - it's an MS-specific thing
for connecting Windoze machines together.  Getting W95 to speak PPP over
a null-modem cable requires some special gymnastics on the W95 side: the
simplest solution would probably be to replace W95 with NetBSD, otherwise
seek advice in a W95 forum or search the archives of comp.protocols.ppp.
