Just a data point, I'm using a 3gig toshiba on my shark (netbsd 1.4.2)
without a problem:

  wdc0 at ofisa0 (ide@i1f0)
  wd0 at wdc0 channel 0 drive 0: <TOSHIBA MK3003MAN>
wd0: drive supports 16-sector pio transfers, lba addressing
  wd0: 2937MB, 5968 cyl, 16 head, 63 sec, 512 bytes/sect x 6015744 sectors
wd0: drive supports PIO mode 4, DMA mode 2

I'm running on the 980225 copy of the firmware.
