hmm, does the machine negotiate some buff ide mode, or something?

you might tweak your kernel (or have somebody build you a kernel)
which detunes the IDE modes.


I seem to recall that there were some issues with ISA DMA, that would
cause the cs89x0 to lose a word from time to time.  I don't recall
what exactly they were, though, nor did i ever know the cause or
whether it was specific to the cx89x0.

Mark H., you remeber that problem?
