I haven't had any joy getting it to work, either with an existing X
installation or with a clean build of xsrc (I'm running a 1.4M kernel
compiled from -current last night). The XF86_S3V server doesn't seem to
like the XF86Config files produced by xf86config:

-----
Using pcvt driver (version 3.32)
XF86Config: /etc/XF86Config
(**) stands for supplied, (--) stands for probed/default values

Config Error: /etc/XF86Config:197

    Xkbkeycodes "xfree86"
    ^^^^^^^^^^^^
Keyboard section keyword expected
X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).
----

Commenting out the lines it is offended by gives:

----
checkMapInfo: warning: failed to get map info for region 3
	(Inappropriate ioctl for device)
(--) checkDevMem: warning: failed to open /dev/mem (Operation not permitted)
	linear framebuffer access unavailable

Fatal server error:
xf86EnableIOPorts: failed to open mem device or map IO base.
Make sure you have the Aperture Driver installed, or a kernel built with the INSECURE option

Do I need to do something like link /dev/ttyv* to /dev/ttyE* (doing so
doesn't help)?

Could someone send me their working XF86Config file?
