I didn't use sysinst. As an aside sysinst failed on my i386 box, so
I did that one manually too.

For my RiscPC:
I emptied /dev/wd0e (/usr)
I untarred all the 1.4 sets onto /dev/wd0e
Then I booted off /dev/wd0e which gave me a 1.4 system
Finally I emptied /dev/wd0a and did it all again to get
me a 1.4 system on /dev/wd0a

I don't see why you couldn't do this for any box.
