I did it this way round, because that was recommended in the CD-RW's
manual.  (It was also convenient, from the point of view of the position
in the case, and the wiring...)  I'll try swapping them when I get a
moment.

The one on the case, for the HD and the one on the drive for the CD-RW.
And it's usually one or the other on permanently, rather than both.  I
haven't had enough playing time yet to determine a reproducible pattern
and/or correlate it with events in /var/log/messages.
