Hi all,

Thanks to the people on the list (and especially to Ian Fry for
spending an evening here with a CD of useful downloaded packages) I
now have the shark nicely up and running with X and (assuming it
finishes compiling OK) xemacs.

I have (of course!) a couple more questions though...

1) I have yet to do the shark hardware fix. My hardware guru informs
me that this works by dropping the Vco voltage to the graphics chip
slightly which results in a smoother signal but has the side effect of
dropping the maximum attainable dot clock. Does this mean that all the
mode definitions are going to need changing when I do the fix? Or just
that I'll get a lower frame rate? Or even that I'll lose the ability
to do the really big ones (1600x1200?)/

2) Can I run X in 15/16/24/32 colour modes? 8 bit seems to work fine,
but ideally I'd like to use 15/16 bit modes more of the time (to avoid
the dreaded problems with X running out of color entries).

I have tried changing the /usr/X11/lib/X11/XF86Config file to make the
monitor come up in other bit depths, but only the 15 bit one gave me a
recognisable picture, and tests with XV seemed to indicate that the
colors were screwed.

Any suggestions?

3) As suggested earlier in request to another question of mine, pc3
works well as the default terminal type; but I have a UK keyboard so
some of the keys are shuffled a bit. Is there an easy way of fixing
this?

I guess I could try to edit the entry in the /etc/share/misc/termcap
file, but this feels wrong. Adding a new entry feels better, but it
strikes me that people have probably done this already (or in a neater
way).

<FX: Checks Shark...>

xemacs has just finished building for me - if anyone wants to know
what changes I made to make it compile, then please let me know.

Thanks again,

Robin
