Hi,
  UVM is primarily a kernel enhancement. However there are a number of
binaries that make sure of kernel data structures e.g. ps, systat, top
etc. and thus there are some userland binaries that will need upgrading to
the more UVM builds of them.
You will find that you can boot with a UVM kernel and still run most
binaries for say a 1.3.2 release but binaries such as ps will not work.
