I've built Mozilla from pkgsrc, and downloaded the Cryptozilla that Neil
Carson made available a while back.

Both of these work okay for me on local files and both fail to work on
anything that would require a TCP connection (like http and ftp URLs!).
They display an error dialogue with the message:

"A network error occured: unable to connect to server (TCP Error:
   XP_GetBuiltinString: 1015 not found)"

The traffic in the list at the time indicates that it works for some
people and doesn't work for others, and we never got to the bottom of
what the difference between working and none working setups was.

The number "1015" is what I get from cz - I get an identical message
from mozilla, but with a different number there. I think
XP_GetBuiltinString is a red herring anyway, having looked at the source
all it means is "I was going to tell you what sort of TCP Error we got,
but the message that I was going to print is missing".

I'm planning to play with the Mozilla sources again later this week in
an attempt to figure out what is going on. Before I devote some
sleepless nights to this, did anyone else ever make any progress with
it? :-)
