Is there any interest (or current activity) in ports to one of the
several high integration ARM CPUs designed for portable and NC
applications? (The DEC (now Intel) SA1100, Cirrus CL-PS7111, or Cirrus
CL-PS7500FE).
We are a small manufacturer of mainly PC/104 embedded system CPUs,
I/O cards etc. Our main market has been embedded DOS based systems, but as
more and more small systems need network connectivity, and more
specifically TCPIP and WEB based access, we need to look at other
operating system options.
Our choices seem to be one of the many real-time operating systems
(VRTX, PSOS, QNX etc) or Windows CE. The real time operating systems look
fine for large volume applications, but most of our customers only have
volumes in the 100's to 1000's ranges and the licensing and learning curve
of theses operation systems look pretty steep in these low volumes.
Windows CE has some advantages, but we are a little reluctant to
buy into what is essentially a consumer product, with the assosciated lack
of stability, market driven features, and nothing remotely like a second
source.
That, and the fact that memory is so inexpensive now makes one of
the free unix systems look like a very attractive for embedded systems in
the low to medium volume ranges (just as DOS did about 10 years ago).
NetBSD looks especially good because of the wied range of supported
platforms

What about a Embedded-NetBSD mailing list?
