I think there's an option in the boot loader to change this, I've had the
kernel running in 800x600 before. (note I can't check as I'm not on at my
computer...) You should be warned that you get a strange looking line of
text at the bottom of the screen (generally it's something that scrolled
by earlier, I believe this is fixed in the new console stuff :)
