The patches seem to let the system pass my vfork() sanity checks
(those in the PR), as well.

I'm in the process of starting a build of the system, just to exercise
it a bit.  (In case anybody cares, I'm abandoning the EGCS-based
compiler for now.  "known evil better than unknown evil," and all
that. 8-)
