I union mounted a bit of disk over /usr/local when I first installed
1.2G. My idea was to keep the stuff that I made locally seperate from
the stuff in /usr/local which comes from the RiscBSD distribution.

I stopped using it because I had problems - though my problems were
different to those you describe (when the system was busy I would end up
with a deadlock situation were something went wrong with the union mount
and every process that tried to access /usr/local would block
indefinately).
