I get:
  *gzip -h
  gzip 1.2.4 (18 Aug 93)

I'm not sure where this came from, but it's definitely SA compatible.  I
found a similar question about gzip back in March 1997, to which the reply
was to check
    <http://astro.grun.is/gzip/>
I'm not sure if the link is still valid, but it might be worth a try.
