The double speed is still useful! We did for a while use my port of
ARM's assembler-crafted soft-float library which as around 50% faster,
but it didn't fully IEEE conform, so had to go in order to allow us to
pass the Java compliance test (JCK I think). There were also some ugly
licencing issues that weren't fully sorted.
