I asked this a few weeks ago, and got some helpful replies and so have
made a bit of progress - but even logged in as root, I cannot get the
thing to start.

startx produces:

Waiting for X server to begin accepting connections
..
..
fatal server error
failed to establish all listening sockets

giving up
xinit: connection refused (errno 61): unable to connect to X server
xinit: no such process (errno 3) : server error


This is a stand alone machine, with no modem or network card attached.
So far, I have been unable to do anything useful with it  at all (1.3
Alpha, 21 Nov 97) apart from finding the Wumpus.

I'm probably missing something obvious, but what is it?
