ISTR that the etherH driver is hardwired to use the bnc connector and dosn't
autodetect or anything  helpfull like that.

I think you need a straight through cable rather than a crossed over on if
your just plugging utp directly into the computers other wise you'll need to
buy a hub (cheapo ones are ~ 50 ukp).

look at the man pages for 'ifconfig', 'ping' is a good testing tool, and look
at 'netstat' (particulary netstat -in and -rn ) for more diagnostics. Oh and
you may need 'hostname' as well, and edit /etc/hosts to make it a bit more
friendly... ('domainname' is for your YP domain which you probably won't
need)

Wiring it into your boot sequence (so the network is configured every time
you switch on) depends on what version of the boot sequencs stuff you are
running. on mine you need to set your hostname in /etc/myname, create an
ifconfig.eh0 (follow the instructions in /etc/netstart).
