Simply add a line to the end of /etc/rc.local or maybe two lines e.g.

setdisplay -x 1280 -y 1024 -c 8 -f 70
/usr/X11R6.1/bin/xdm

This is a debug message I have not removed from the kernel. It was added 
during the last round of changes to the mouse drivers and X.
Ignore it.
(It just indicates a particular case where earlier X servers would have 
messed up the mouse position).
