The sys.tar.gz file is a normal NetBSD sys source tree
e.g.

ftp.southern.com:/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-current/tar_files/src/sys.tar.gz

the sys-arm32.tar.gz file on the RiscbSD ftp site is a cut down sys source tree
with just the arm32 port with patches applied. This is now rather out of data
so you are better off working with NetBSD-current. That way you get all the
recent changes since the 1.2 release and for the kernel that can be important.

Note: If you need the cumana SCSI driver then you should use the latest one in
the sources/patches/NetBSD directory on the RiscBSD ftp site.
You will need the general patches to the config and you will need an uptodate
csc.o file. The one to us for NetBSD-current is csc-211096.o

You will also want to apply the ffs_inode.c.patch
