What the Red Hat installer does is to take you through the initial stages
of installation (partitioning the disk, initialising swap etc.) in a
text-based non-X environment. As soon as it's configured the swap it boots
into X and starts initialising the filesystems, prompting for sets etc.
Maybe this would be a good model to use ?
