Well there is a perl script called erm mirror which does cunning things with 
the ftp system so that you basically enter the source and destination and it 
goes and recursivly 'dir's the ftp site, compares this with the destination 
dir and then will ftp all the files that are new/updated

I think I found it by doing an archie search - I think it's located on 
sunsite.doc.ic.ac.uk some where!
