Hi,

Are you sure the X console window (in fact an xterm) didn't appear in the
top *left* of the screen?

To "use" things properly you need to start a window manager. For the
standard twm one, type
	twm& <return>
in the console window, for fvwm (better) type
	fvwm& <return>
in the console window.
