I don't have any I/O performance testing software installed (e.g., Bonnie), but simple "dd bs=1m ..."-style read and write tests to large files on an FFS file system gives me 180--200 MByte/sec transfers.

My main aim is to get the system off the SD card for reliability purposes.

Also, SD card speeds aren't anything to write home about, so even USB2 is probably an improvement. :-)
