I tried replacing the linux kernel on a Raspbian image with the NetBSD
kernel and adjusting the config lines in cmdline.txt and config.txt to
boot NetBSD and it still hung in the same place.  One would expect the
Raspbian image to use the latest firmware, but perhaps not...

As was mentioned you will get a 32 bit system, and I am not sure that
the CPUs are running at their highest clock:

cpu0 at mainbus0 core 0: 600 MHz Cortex-A53 r0p4 (Cortex V8A core)
                         ^^^^^^^

.. but sysctl says:

machdep.cpu.frequency.current = 1200
