This seems to have been it.  I tried the other disk alone, booting from
the net, and it came up but then wedged as soon as I tried to do
anything with the disk.  Another disk worked fine when netbooting, so I
tried it as slave with the old laptop drive as master, and it all Just
Worked.

Thank you very much!  I might not have thought of that at all, and
certainly not anytime soon.
