I made my 1.6 kernel more stable by removing the -march=3Darm4
-mcpu=3Dstrongarm from the kernel Makefile.

However, this is not causing the metafont losses, so I'll try
recompiling teTeX-bin unoptimized as a workaround as you suggested.
