I doubt there is much difference between the current netbsd-5 branch and
5.0.1-release.

I couldn't reproduce it with pcre-7.7 from pkgsrc-2008Q2, running a 5.0.1
kernel. Which pkgsrc did you use?

For me it fails with a redefinition error:
