In NetBSD is very easy (no special parameters are needed). I run NetBSD-hp300
with kernel version 1.4.1, and it works:

 - Configure the vnd0 device:

  vnconfig /dev/vnd0 miniroot.fs

 - Mount the device:

  mount /dev/vnd0c /mnt

 - Dismount:

  umount /mnt

 - Unconfigure the device:

  vnconfig -u /dev/vnd0

FreBSD should be very similar.
