Oh yes, you can... this was never "not booting" problem, just a
"wrong date shown" problem. Why do you think you can't? What error
symptoms/ messages are you seeing?

No, it isn't.

In case this is really your problem: you can try the kernel from the
1.4.2_ALPHA snapshot, which is fixed.

partially, yes. for example, ps, w, netstat and similar problems would have
minor problems. If you don't have COMPAT_14 in the kernel, you'll have
problems for system calls that have changes, because the old versions won't 
be in the kernel anymore.
