Correct.

Yes you do, there is no difference between the unixen, bsds and linux 
on this. You can ofcourse use some other editor if you like, such as
jed, jove, pico, joe, ned or whatever.

There will always be fringe OSes, there is no reason why Joe Doe should
have to know how to use each and every OS out there. Joe Doe has alot of
options to choose from, no reason to ick the hard ones unless it has a
certain purpose.
