old X, new 1.4.1pre

Hello. I just did a binary upgrade from 1.3.3 to
1.4.1pre on my (pretty bog standard) A4000/040,
but only installed the base, misc, man, kern and comp
sets, leaving the existing X11 install from the 1.3.3
installation alone. I didn't marge the etc set with
my existing configs yet, but anyway that doesn't
really concern X. Are there any issues with keeping an
old X like this? It behaves differently now; the picture
is a bit jerky (although with 8bit AGA, it is always
painfully slow -- still waiting for my CV3d to arrive..)
and the picture flickers every now and then, especially
when I suddenly move the pointer or something.

btw, what's the current state of CV64-3D support in the
X tree -- still just a dumb chunky 8bit fb? No 16/24 bit
in sight?

I got 1.4.1pre binaries because ISTR problems with kernel
lockups in stock 1.4, but I want to compile my own kernel
ASAP; what sources should I get at this point (or should
I wait a bit?) -- there aren't any 1.4.1pre source-snapshots
are there?

off topic: I'm looking into plip, which seems be available
in port-i386. I've never written any kernel- or IP code --
would it be too difficult for me to have a go at it without
previous knowledge? I want to connect my newly acquired
(I'm not joking :-) ) 486 to my amiga, and plip seems
like the most attractive solution.

TIA,
