I've uploaded a test kernel (with Michael Hitch's patch) to

README contains a md5 checksum of the gzipped kernel.

Please test over the weekend. I want the fix to be in the 1.4.1 tree, 
and release engineering won't wait for us for more than a few days.

Also: people with monitor synchronizing problems should try this too, 
and tell, whether it works.
