Viewing jpg/gif/whatever on Amiga NetBSD1.2.1? (fwd)

I know that this would simply be accomplished no problem with X-Window
System, however I have had some difficulties with the Amiga port of X11.. 
and would now like to find out how to use the /dev/grf* devices and
directly access the display chips. 

Documentation on this is very sparse, and my search has been fruitless. I
don't suppose someone on this list could direct me towards a possible
source of information regarding this type of access? (I'd like to do this
in a NetBSD-friendly way.. I guess I could fiddle with hardware directly
and bypass things, but that would be bad. :)
