just got a suggestion on the nature of _my_ problem, (couldn't test it
yet; I wasn't at home); but it could also apply to you.

Did you ever upgrade your filesystem to NetBSD-1.0 or later? (fsck -c
2 or fsck -c 3)

"My" Bootblock uses the generic libsa filesystem code, compiled with
the no-old-filesystem compat switch to save space. (M. Hitches
bootblock uses own code (I think, root dir only), and might well work
on old filesystems... just fine.

So, you might want to single user boot, and fsck -c 3 your root.
