I used the recommended changes to /usr/local/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc 
from the new X11 FAQ. They look like this:
usermodmap=$HOME/.Xmodmap
if [ -f $usermodmap ]; then
	xmodmap $usermodmap
fi
