 startx -- "-mode w -dev /dev/grf3"

 Whereas w stands for the grfmode you want.  -dev will then open X only on
the Cirrus board.  w/o this option, it will also open on ECS.  For the
later you either need two monitors, or my old "toggle" tool to be found in
the old cirrus-archives.
