The answer is in ld.so.conf.  I had:

/usr/pkg/lib
/usr/X11R7/lib

I swapped the ordr of the two lines, and now it works.  So I imagine
that therre is something in /usr/pkg/lib that is being loaded ny
xterm, though ldd doesn't suggest that that would happen.
Thanks Mouse, Martin and RVP, you just removed a roadblock for me.
