For anyone reading the archives later:

  "userconf disable radeon*" works, in that no radeon is attached and
  whatever DRM/KMS stuff would happen doesn't happen.

  "userconf disable radeon0" still leads to a blank screen.

  there were no reports about NetBSD experience on this model
