They are both running the same BIOS, from April 06 (1.1A, I think). I am about 
to upgrade them.

Hmm. Could I trouble you for an install ISO :-) Actually, I'd be happy, for now, 
  if I could get both machines running cleanly (and without the silly slowdown) 
in single-CPU mode.

I should note that I wasn't able to boot 3.99.8 on these machines (that's where 
I started about 10 days ago, since I have 3.99.8 on this motherboard, albeit 
with an older BIOS)...
